MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived compound, intended for controlled laboratory investigations of AMPK activation, glucose metabolism pathways, and mitochondrial retrograde signaling.  It has drawn research interest for its apparent role as a signaling molecule involved in the metabolic switch between glucose and fat utilization.  In preclinical models, MOTS-c has been studied for its association with fat oxidation and metabolic effects relevant to exercise physiology, without evidence of associated muscle loss in those models.
